Will I get the promotion?

First, ask your question. Then you’ll pick a card.

The review is coming, or it came and went without the word you wanted. Hold the question — will I get the promotion? — and draw one card below. You'll get a yes, no, maybe, or not yet, read through the card's meaning at work.

A promotion is a decision other people make about work you've already done. The card can't sit in the meeting. It can show you whether the case is made, and if not, what's missing from it.

Signs the promotion is coming

  • You're already doing the job

Leading the project, in the meetings above your grade, the person people ask. Titles usually follow reality by six months.

  • Your manager is sponsoring you

They mention your name upward, send you to represent the team, ask about your ambitions. A sponsor is worth more than a review.

  • The business has the room

A new team, someone leaving, a budget approved. Promotions need a space to promote you into.

  • The feedback has become specific

'Work on X and you're ready' is a map. Vague praise is pleasant and useless.

Signs it's being held back

  • You're indispensable where you are

The cruellest reason: you're too good at the current job to move. Train your replacement, visibly.

  • Nobody above your manager knows your name

Promotions are decided in rooms you aren't in. If no one there can describe your work, it won't be you.

  • The last two cycles went to someone else

A pattern is information. Ask directly what the gap is — and if the answer is vague twice, the gap may be politics, not performance.

Questions people ask

Which tarot card means a promotion?
The Six of Wands — recognition and victory. The Emperor shows authority, the Three of Pentacles skilled work being rewarded, the Chariot determination paying off, and the King of Pentacles senior standing earned over time.
What does the Ten of Wands mean for a promotion?
Be careful what you wish for. The Ten of Wands is more responsibility without the reward to match — a 'promotion' that's really extra load. Ask what the title comes with before you celebrate.
I pulled 'not yet'. How long is that?
The Seven of Pentacles suggests one more cycle of visible work. The Hanged Man suggests the decision is outside your hands for now — a reorganisation, a budget, a manager in flux. Either way, make the case again in writing.
